From Primary to Priory: The 2025 Science Competition
2 July 2025
Last week, Year 5 pupils from our partner primary schools joined us for our annual science competition. Pupils went head to head in a range of activities to see which school would come out on top.
The afternoon began with a science quiz on an array of topics before moving on to identifying adaptations of organisms and how these adaptations helped them to survive!
For the practical round, pupils tested some very similar looking white powders and had to carry out scientific experiments on them to deduce the identification of each one. There was fierce debate between salt and sugar before deciding!
After a round of identifying hazards in a science lab, each group was given a maze, a magnet and a metal object. This was a relay to see how quickly the four members of the team could successfully navigate their way around.
Assistant Head of Science, Mrs Potter, said, “This was a close-fought battle to the end with New Longton All Saints and Lostock Hall Primary School in a tie-break situation.”
With one question on the periodic table, Lostock Hall Community Primary School was declared the overall winner and left with the accolade.
Both schools have now been invited to return with their class to have an afternoon of science with us. These will be planned individually to meet the needs and interests of the schools. Notably, with last year’s winners requesting a session on dissections!
“The feedback from the school was very positive and has given me some great ideas to start planning next years' event,” Mrs Potter concluded.
