Debate Club meets every Wednesday in the Humanities Department and their discussions are making their mark across the school.

Led by History teacher, Miss Ackers, the weekly meetings had already earned pupils a temporary change to one school policy after they met with Principal, Mr Eastham, in the Autumn term. To add to this, before the half term break, the group then were successfully grated permission for pupils to wear appropriate fancy dress for World Book Day next Thursday.

Other topics on the club's agenda are pronoun pins, after pupils expressed a desire for them. They’re also in the process of obtaining permission for pupils to  recognise awareness days in school by wearing an associated token of colour such as purple for Deaf Awareness Day.

Miss Ackers said, "At Debate Club, pupils get to practice their skills and they put forward their arguments in such a succinct way. I’m so proud of them! I also think it’s important that the rest of the school gets to know what we're discussing and hear about their achievements. As a school, we can truly say we support democracy."

India, Year 9, said, "I really enjoy debate club as I get to let my confidence grow and build up my debating skills. I personally argued for pronoun pins as it would enable students as well as myself to feel more comfortable in school. I’m really happy that Mr Eastham liked my idea and I hope to continue with debate club until I leave school’

The next session meets in HU6 on Wednesday, 2 March. Everyone welcome.
