Year 11 Computer Science Pupils Go Behind the Scenes of Priory’s Network Infrastructure

Year 11 Computer Science pupils were given a behind‑the‑scenes look at the heart of Priory’s ICT systems just before half term, thanks to a guided tour led by ICT Technician Mr Oakes.

The session, organised to support pupils’ GCSE Computer Science studies, took students beyond the classroom and into the real working environment of the school’s network. 

Mr Oakes walked the group through Priory’s server rooms, explained the structure of the network, and demonstrated how different systems work together to keep the school running smoothly on a daily basis.

His clear and engaging explanation brought their learning on networks to life, helping students make crucial links between theory and practice. Many were fascinated to see the scale and complexity of the infrastructure they usually experience only through diagrams and exam questions.

The impact was immediate. Pupils left the session “buzzing with enthusiasm” and several commented that the tour made them even more prepared for their upcoming GCSE exam. 

A number of students have even asked for a further, more technical tour, having been inspired by what ICT careers could offer.

Head of ICT, Mrs Qadri, expressed her appreciation for Mr Oakes by saying, “It was wonderful to see our Year 11 students so engaged and inspired during their network tour. Opportunities like this bridge the gap between classroom learning and real‑world application, helping students understand how the systems they study operate in a professional environment. I am incredibly grateful to Mr Oakes for giving up his time and sharing his expertise. Experiences like this can be pivotal in shaping a young person’s interest in pursuing a future career in ICT.”

The experience not only enhanced pupils’ subject knowledge but also opened their eyes to the pathways and opportunities within the ICT field - something Priory continues to champion as part of its commitment to careers education for our young people.
