Every Wednesday lunchtime in MF1, a group of enthusiastic pupils gathers for our Japanese Club. Open to all year groups, the club offers a relaxed and welcoming space to explore the Japanese language, culture, and even the art of origami.

Led by the wonderfully dedicated Mrs Small, a local Japanese resident who volunteers her time each week, the club has become a firm favourite among pupils.

While the sessions are informal and fun, Mrs Small’s passion for her native country has inspired some pupils to take their interest further - one former student even achieved a GCSE in Japanese, and two current Year 10 pupils are preparing to sit the exam next summer.

This week marked the final session of the summer term, as Mrs Small prepares to travel back to Japan to visit her family. To show their appreciation, the group, along with Head of Languages Mrs Scully, presented her with a card and flowers as a heartfelt thank you for her commitment and kindness.

Japanese Club will return in the autumn term, and all pupils are welcome to join. Whether you’re curious about the language, love origami, or just want to try something new—come along and give it a go.
