The Year 7 Science Club has been busy exploring science in exciting and creative ways!
Running every Tuesday after school, the club gives pupils the opportunity to put their scientific knowledge and practical skills to the test through a range of fun challenges and experiments.
So far, the pupils have tackled a particularly challenging mission: safely transporting ‘nuclear waste’ into new containers so that it could be stored securely deep below the Earth. Working together, they had to think carefully about how they could complete the task safely and successfully, putting their problem-solving and teamwork skills to the test.
This week, the focus shifted to a skill that pupils are currently learning about in their science lessons: chromatography. Chromatography is a technique that can be used to separate the different dyes that make up a mixture.
Assistant Head of Science, Mrs Potter, explained further, “The pupils put their classroom learning into practice by testing a range of different coloured pens. They investigated which dyes were present in each pen and explored which inks spread out the most during the experiment. It was a great opportunity to see how the science they have been learning in lessons can be applied to a practical investigation.”
But the science didn't stop there! After discovering which inks and dyes produced the most interesting results, the pupils used their findings to create a variety of colourful hairstyles for their trolls. Their creative designs provided a fun way to demonstrate what they had discovered during their chromatography investigations.
